Processes on and under the earth's surface.

The distinguishing feature of the Department of Earth Sciences is the broad array of topics covered, ranging from cultural and social focuses in human geography to natural science issues in geo-ecology and physical geography, from the didactics of geography to subterranean processes investigated at the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics. The breadth of topics covered also provides an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation, which is put into practice in numerous projects.

In addition, members of the department are involved in the Advanced Research Fields African Studies (IAS), Ecology & the Environmental Sciences (BayCEER) and High Pressure & High Temperature Research (BGI), and in the Emerging Fields Cultural Encounters & Transcultural Processes, Food & Health Sciences, Energy Research & Energy Technology, and Governance & Responsibility.
